Anaïs Spencer travels the world lying to men. As an imperilled Mossad agent, an international aid worker, a Venetian countess dispossessed—for seven years her first-class flights and hotel suites have been paid for by the hapless men upon whom she subsists. But Exquisite Hours is a novel about a beautiful young woman who is tired of wandering. Confessions of love are becoming chronic. Anaïs is too often having to resort to her last line of defence—the rufie. In a matter of days she flees from Hong Kong to New York to Missouri to Bangladesh to Bangkok, at last to Venice, where she falls in love with her false-speaking match, a handsome young liar who survives by giving very fanciful city tours to very credulous tourists. But will her deceitful past allow Anaïs a happy future?
I love discovering new, talented authors, and I’m happy I came across Joshua Humphreys.Joshua is a comedy novelist and his writing is sharp, witty, on point and he has a way of making the absurd seem very charming. With Anaïs, Exquisite Hours’ captivating heroine who “travels the world lying to men”, he has created an alluring and smart protagonist who takes us on her travels from NY to Bangkok, to Venice and London (with some other surprising stops in between). Anaïs lives in a world where most men are idiots (almost child-like) adoring her, her wish their every command. She’s a gifted liar and the gullibility of these men would be astonishing, if it weren’t all so damn funny. In the end, Anaïs meets her match, and there’s also plenty of romance to be had.The comedic strength of the novel lies in the witty dialogue, the astute observations, some light-hearted stereotyping and the absurdity of it all. The author’s attention to detail is incredible and his description of Venice in particular is beautiful. It’s not a perfect novel (the ending felt a little rushed) but a definite recommendation and a great read. Joshua Humphreys is a very skillful novelist and I look forward to seeing how he matures as a writer.
