back in the day, I somehow got a cut-out promo cassette copy of this album. the Exquisite Corpse title caught my eye then I noticed it seemed to feature Roger Miller from the boston punk band Mission of Burma. for some reason the album came to my memory and I bought a used CD from Amazon. the cassette was long gone...Unfold is closer to the minimalist-classical-jazz-rock of Miller's Birdsongs of the Mesozoic than to the rowdy punk of Burma. The quartet lineup for Unfold is curious: Miller on piano, synth/sampler and guitar; a violinist; a drummer/percussionist; and (get this) someone on the sackbut and shawm, early versions of the trombone and oboe. Rich Gilbert, of Human Sexual Response, Concussion Ensemble and Frank Black and the Catholic, plays steel guitar on a few tracks.the music ranges from jazz (a version of Duke's The Mooch) to quasi-Renaissance (Dance in the Poet's Eye), a couple more rockin' songs, and (get this) the Looney Tunes theme. Unfold is all over the map, in the best possible way, and it works more often than not. Recommended for open-eared listeners.
